Deaneries are regional sub divisions of the LCU. They are composed of preaching stations and congregations grouped on a regional territorial basis with a common language. They are created as a need arises by the NSBT and ratified by the National Synod conference.

A Deanery is headed by a Dean working with the council known as a regional Synod conference.
Currently there seven gazetted deaneries including Eastern, Far East, Northern, North Eastern,

THE EVOLUTION OF THE LUTHERAN CHURCH IN SOUTH WESTERN DEANERY
History and current state.

The Lutheran church in south western deanery was started in 2003 by missionary Solomon Ayagri
from Evangelical Lutheran of Ghana serving under the Lutheran church mission in Uganda.

The firstLutheran converts in the region were Mr. Fred Magezi Mutungi- now the National head of laity and Rev. Benson Barahuka now a pastor and dean of the church.

Missionary Solomon Ayagri

These two men helped missionary Solomon Ayagri who had set up a mission station in Mbarara to spread Lutheranism in the region.

The first Lutheran congregations include Grace Lutheran Church in Kamukuzi Division in Mbarara, Holy Trinity in Bufunda division of Ibanda municipality and Immanuel Lutheran church in Ishongoro
town council.

In 2003 the deanery entered into a partnership with Immanuel Lutheran congregation Brookfield Wisconsin USA to do social ministry especially in the field of education and training of lay leaders to serve the numerically growing church.
